Disclaimer: The lovely people at the PGA Tour invited me out to TPC Sawgrass once again to wine and dine me. Of course I said yes. They also compensated me with chocolate, but all opinions are my own.
It’s THE PLAYERS Championship week!
Once again this year, I headed out to TPC Sawgrass to get a sneak peek at the food options they’ll have available at this week’s golf tournament. Over the past few years, the PGA Tour team has done a tremendous job revamping the dining options, and this year is no exception.
Trucks on 10
The tour started out at Trucks on 10, a new addition to the tournament last year.
Located between the 10th fairway, 11th fairway, and 15th green, here you’ll find Corner Taco (a long-time favorite of mine), Up in Smoke BBQ, Pounders Burgers, Cely’s Filipino Food (please tell me they have lumpia!), and Mama’s Food. Mama’s Food was generous enough to provide some great samples for the hungry media crowd.
Since I tried their empanada and quesadilla last year (they were great!), this year I gave the chicken and rice bowl a try:
Great flavor, not too spicy. Definitely a winner if you need some carbs to soak up all that booze.
Tacos on 12
Another new addition to the tournament last year, Tacolu has once again set up shop for Tacos on 12.
As a long-time lover of Tacolu, I love how they bring their signature taste out to THE PLAYERS without sacrificing the quality of the product. I highly suggest the Chicken Verde – it was my first time trying it, and it was fantastic! If you know me or you’ve been reading here for a while, you’ll know I do NOT like seafood, so this may come as a shock… I absolutely LOVE their Bangin’ Shrimp Taco. It’s unreal.
Also, good news – they’ve expanded their setting area this year by adding more picnic tables.
Fun fact: All of the tables were painted by Tacolu staff!
Taste of JAX
Introduced in 2013, Taste of JAX is what really kicked off the movement towards a local dining experience at the tournament, and this year is no different.
While the line up is slightly different this year, Taste of JAX does not disappoint. Metro Diner was all “Bring. It. On.” with their signature Fried Chicken and Waffles with sweet strawberry butter and a spicy dipping sauce:
And next door, 4 Rivers Smokehouse was all “ITS ALREADY BEEN BROUGHT-EN” with this gorgeous hunk o’ brisket:
You really cannot go wrong with either. So get both. I won’t tell.
And while you’re at it, you obviously have to get the signature drink of THE PLAYERS, the Sawgrass Splash:
I mean, it’s not THE PLAYERS until you have a Sawgrass Splash.
Made with Grey Goose L’Orange vodka, lemonade, orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup, this drink cannot be missed. They will sneak up on you though, so consider yourself warned. Last thing we need is the ladies of Duval* embarrassing us now that Tiger Woods is single.
If you find yourself behind the grandstands overlooking 17, you’ll notice things look a little different this year. They’ve moved the PGA Tour Store back there, added a permanent bathroom, and rearranged a few things. M Shack, Firehouse Subs, Bono’s BBQ, and Tropical Smoothie are still in the food court. There’s also an expanded kids zone that looks pretty fun for the little ones.
I’m not sure if I’ll get a chance to get out to the tournament this year, but I really hope I make it out there cause you know I don’t like missing any opportunity to stalk Adam Scott.
Happy PLAYERS Week, y’all!
*Yes, I know the tournament is in St Johns, but there’s a reason we’re all DUUUVVVALLLLLL.
