2014 has been an absolute rollercoaster of a year. With all the ups and downs, the time has flown by. It’s already late October, and this is by far my favorite time of the year. My life is consumed by half marathon training, football games, and gradually cooler weather (emphasis on “gradually”). The past two Jaguars home games, I’ve been so happy that the early mornings at the slab have required a jacket.
This past weekend’s cooler game day temperature inspired me to make a warm breakfast to have before engaging in circle ups and adult beverage consumption. At first, I considered a casserole, but I really wanted biscuits and gravy – warm, thick, spicy sausage gravy because yum. Instead of making individual biscuits, I chose to make a big ol’ Bisquick biscuit in a casserole dish and slather it in homemade sausage gravy. Win win.
Serious question: Is kale still trendy? Are all the cool kids still eating it? Cause I’m gonna post a recipe featuring it. Get excited cause it’s time to talk about bacon and kale egg white scrambles.
Even though Sunday brunch is one of my favorite activities, I haven’t been in ages. I’m not even sure why I haven’t been! So when Ovinte asked me to come in and give their brunch a try, I jumped at the opportunity.
And as we all know, any good brunch starts with brunch cocktails.
Confession: I have about half a dozen super ripe bananas in my freezer. I tend to stockpile then subsequently forget about them. That is, until I open my freezer and think “Where the f$%& did all these bananas come from?!”
Avondale’s The Fox Restaurant is one of those places I’ve walked by a million times and always thought, “Man, I need to try that one.” I add it to my mental list, and it gets lost in a blackhole (this happens a lot with restaurants). I always seem to forget about it!
An impromptu Twitter breakfast led me there a few weekends ago. We got there early (think 8:30ish) and were immediately seated. I immediately liked that the options of the menu – it wasn’t just huge breakfast after huge breakfast like so many other places. Since I wasn’t in the mood for a lot of food, I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.
Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Any big plans for the game? We’re headed to a friend’s for a cookout and some beer drinkin’ (shocking, I know). Since the Jaguars aren’t playing, who do you have your money on? I’m going with the 49ers because we all know I have a massive love affair with San Francisco. Plus I think it’d be awesome for them to win since the Giants won the World Series this season too. Save me, San Francisco (is that my catch phrase yet?).
Anyway…. You know what else I have a massive love affair with?
Breakfast. And when we woke up
at 7:30 am SUPER DUPER early this morning, I knew we could beat the crowd at Metro Diner. I’ve been a few times, but I never remember to bring my camera. This morning, I was awake enough to grab it. We both stared at the menu for a while unsure of what to order – it all sounded so good. I debated between Biscuits and Gravy, Chicken and Waffles, and the Bissell Breakfast. As soon as he heard that Fried Green Tomato Eggs Benedict was a special, he was sold.
